SA mash

This place is not new. It is around the corner from the office and I have posted about it before; perhaps in my first week in SA.

I order the same dish every time I am here: zone 3 (a piece of chicken, a piece of beef and a sausage), swap the sausage for a chicken with samp and no gravy.

What is new is what I have learnt. Samp is a South African dish that consists of dried maize kernels that are pounded and stamped. The unbroken maize kernels are also boiled. The dish resembles a chunky mash. It is called stampmielies in Afrikaans. In this place it is served with white beans.
